First Footing, Hog Roasts, and New Year Cheer: A Scottish Tradition with a Tasty Hog Roast Edinburgh Twist

Hog Roast EdinburghIn Scotland, there’s a charming tradition that ensures good fortune for the year ahead – it’s called First Footing, and it’s a lovely way to celebrate the New Year. The idea is simple: the first person to cross your threshold after midnight is said to set the tone for your year, bringing luck and good vibes. The best part? These visitors come bearing gifts! Expect to receive everything from coal for warmth, to biscuits for a well-stocked kitchen, and salt to symbolise prosperity.

This year, Callum and Katie decided to take First Footing to the next level by hosting a relaxed New Year’s Day gathering at their home, inviting family and friends to celebrate with them. After the excitement of a lively Hogmanay bash, they were ready to embrace a more laid-back affair – but, of course, they wanted it to be extra special. So, naturally, they called in Hog Roast Edinburgh’s talented catering team who helped bring their vision to life with a stunning spread that delighted their guests.

Steve, our enthusiastic catering manager, couldn’t have been more excited to play a part in Callum and Katie’s celebration. He arrived bright and early, ready to transform their garden into a feast-worthy venue. With our iconic black gazebo set up and the HogMaster fired up, he got to work on roasting a whole pig – ensuring that the skin was perfectly scored for that mouth-watering crispy crackling we’re known for. As the delicious aroma filled the air, even the neighbours couldn’t resist peeking out their windows to see what was cooking (though, unfortunately for them, our feast was exclusively for the 55 guests invited to the party!).

Hog Roast EdinburghThe celebration kicked off with New Year’s wishes all around, and everyone quickly made their way to the back garden to grab a plate. Before long, our bamboo plates were stacked high with heavenly pulled pork, crackling, stuffing, and applesauce. Guests also helped themselves to a variety of sides, including a fresh mixed salad, crunchy cucumber, zesty coleslaw, and tomato-mozzarella salad. For the veggie and vegan crowd, Hog Roast Edinburgh served up grilled vegetable and halloumi kebabs with a refreshing tzatziki dip and flatbreads.

Callum and Katie were over the moon with the catering experience, and it wasn’t just about the food – it was about the warm, welcoming atmosphere it created. Thanks to Hog Roast Edinburgh, their First Footing party was filled with good food, good company, and good fortune for the year ahead!
