Hog Roast Carnforth Joins the Loony Dook Tradition for Charity

Hog Roast CarnforthHere in Scotland, traditions take centre stage when it comes to ringing in the New Year, and few are as exhilarating -or downright bonkers -as the Loony Dook. What started in 1987 as a bold (and slightly mad) hangover cure among friends in South Queensferry has transformed into a nationwide phenomenon. Every January 1st, brave souls all over the country plunge into Scotland’s icy waters to kick off the year with a splash.

This year, the tradition took a charitable turn thanks to Corinne, who organised her very own Loony Dook to support a worthy cause. With 300 enthusiastic participants signed up and a crowd of supporters lining the banks last Saturday, the event turned into a joyous celebration. Though Hog Roast Carnforth didn’t take the plunge (we prefer our heat in the form of sizzling roasts), we were delighted to be part of the fun, keeping spirits high and bellies full with our delicious offerings.

Hog Roast CarnforthAnd what a spectacle it was! Participants embraced the Loony Dook’s playful spirit, donning outrageous costumes ranging from superheroes to inflatable flamingos. The sight of these spirited dookers braving the freezing water was both heartwarming and hilarious, their laughter carrying over the waves. Meanwhile, on dry land, the Hog Roast Carnforth team, led by John and Ann, was in full swing, serving up piping-hot hog roast sandwiches brimming with tender pulled pork, crispy crackling, stuffing, and applesauce. For our vegan friends, we dished out BBQ-pulled jackfruit rolls topped with tangy plant-based slaw, a perfect warm-up after an icy dip.

The event buzzed with energy. Live music kept toes tapping (and, perhaps, helped with thawing), while steaming cups of tea, coffee, and hot chocolate provided comfort in the chill. The community’s enthusiasm was contagious, and seeing everyone come together for a good cause reminded us of why we love being part of events like this.

Corinne, glowing with pride and a touch of relief, declared the event a smashing success. The funds raised exceeded expectations, and the smiles on everyone’s faces spoke volumes. She’s already looking forward to next year’s icy plunge and has promised Hog Roast Carnforth a front-row seat – and perhaps a few more hog roast rolls to prepare! We’re ready, Corinne – just don’t ask us to dook!
