There aren’t many events where you can watch prize livestock judging, bump into farmers from the other side of the country and enjoy some of Scotland’s best local produce all before lunchtime.
That’s the Royal Highland Show for you.
Every June, Ingliston becomes a meeting point for thousands of people from across Scotland and beyond. Farmers, producers, businesses, competitors and visitors all descend on Edinburgh for a few days to celebrate rural life, great food and the traditions that help keep both thriving. And every year, Hog Roast Scotland looks forward to being a part of it.
What makes the show particularly special for us is that it shines a spotlight on the people who make our job possible in the first place. Long before we arrive at an event with our grills and serving tables, there are farmers and suppliers putting in the hard work. The quality of our food starts with them. The Royal Highland Show gives us a chance to spend time among those people, see the industry at its best and appreciate the care that goes into producing the ingredients we proudly serve all year round.
Then there’s Bell Ingram. Rural property and farm sale specialists, Royal Highland Show regulars and – happily for us – returning clients who’ve made Hog Roast Scotland part of their two-day setup at the showground year after year. Familiar faces, easy conversation and the quiet satisfaction of knowing exactly what’s expected and being ready to deliver it.
Both days followed the same beautifully simple formula. A whole hog, cooked low and slow until everything about it was exactly right, served in fresh rolls with sage and onion stuffing, crackling, applesauce and coleslaw on the side. The kind of food that suits the setting perfectly – warm, unpretentious and genuinely delicious.
And, you know us, we couldn’t rock up to an event and not serve something equally tasty for our vegetarian and vegan friends – grilled vegetable kebabs made sure everyone had something equally worth turning up for.
Two days, two successful services and another fantastic Royal Highland Show under Hog Roast Scotland’s belt.
