Before breaking up for the summer holidays, there’s one annual school tradition that teachers, students and parents can all look forward to eagerly: Sports day!
An entire day dedicated to unusual activities like the legendary egg and spoon race, sack race, beanbag toss and the three-legged-race; plus, of course, the less bizarre events that include rounders, netball and sprinting, is easily one of the most thrilling days of the school year as it’s all about children having fun and working together.
Of course, all that excitement and activity is sure to lead to a drastic increase in appetites, so it’s always a good idea to have food on standby for the hungry attendees! And Hog Roast Oban was recently hired for that very reason, after Cat, the head teacher at a nearby primary school, had asked for us to prepare a bountiful sports day spread.
With lots of children to feed, along with parents and the school’s members of staff, Cat had been looking for a more versatile menu to suit everyone’s dietary needs. With that in mind, Hog Roast Oban’s catering manager, Steve, had suggested our Southern Slow Roast Menu, which offers an indulgent selection of slow-cooked meats, countered by a tasty meat-free option and lots of yummy sides. On this occasion, this meant a buffet of Texan 24-hour beef brisket, Cajun spiced whole roast chickens, fall off the bone Louisiana sticky pork ribs, and BBQ pulled jackfruit rolls, accompanied by a mixture of sweet potato and traditional fries, Memphis style crunchy coleslaw and Greek salad.
While the children worked hard to win each event and their families cheered them on from the side lines, Hog Roast Oban’s cooking filled the air with gorgeous aromas, which piqued everyone’s interest! Fortunately, the ravenous guests didn’t have to wait long until the food was ready to be served, and after what was an incredibly demanding day, the children were glad to have something delicious to sink their teeth into.
Everyone was extremely impressed by the quality and flavours of the food that our catering crew provided, and as an additional surprise, Cat had us serve ice cream and fresh fruit to the kids as a well done for taking part in all of the activities!
