Kelty is a former mining village that is set on the border of Kinross and Fife and has been established since around 1600 and although the mined has long since closed is still a popular village with commuters as it is situated close to the motorway.
The Fife Coal Company was established in 1872 and by then there were 3 deep mines. The Lindsay Mine originally known as Kelty 4/5 was sunk close to the Railway Station and about half a mile east of the village in 1873 and remained in full operation until 1965 and was fully closed in 1967. There were other mines in Kelty that were not so long lived some only lasting a few short years.
