Dunblane is located 6 miles from Stirling and has become a popular town on the commuter belt, due to its excellent train links. It takes its name from St Blane who reputedly founded the town in the 6th century and part of its church that still stands today dates back to the 11th Century, although it has been significantly altered and extended during its long existence. Dunblane has the oldest private library in Scotland with books in 90 different languages dating from the 11th to 19th Centuries, including a rare 1st edition of Scottish literary icon Sir Walter Scott’s ‘The Lady of the Lake’.
The Dunblane Museum contains an eclectic collection of exhibits and information about the town’s history, including everything from the Jacobite Rebellion to the life and times of tennis legend Andy Murray, who was born here. The River Allan, which runs through the centre of Dunblane has very pleasant riverside walks and it still has an original 16th Century arched bridge spanning across it in the town centre.
