There’s something really lovely about hearing from returning customers – especially when they remember your food years later!
That’s exactly what happened recently when Hog Roast Cupar got a message from Paul and Jean, a couple we’d catered for back when they lived in Mallaig. Apparently our hog roast had stuck in their minds ever since because here they were, years later, wondering if we could make it out to their new neck of the woods.
Luckily for them, the answer was a very easy yes.
This time around, Paul and Jean had organised a get-together for themselves and 30 friends at the stunning Birkhill Castle and, safe to say, expectations were already pretty high before the food even entered the picture.
If you’ve never seen Birkhill Castle before, imagine classic Scottish countryside charm dialled all the way up. Surrounded by wild garden trails, pebble beaches and the kind of sweeping countryside views that make you forget your phone exists, this place feels less like a venue and more like the world’s best getaway. It’s also got an on-site cinema, a gym, billiards room and table tennis – so guests were never going to be stuck for something to do. But Paul and Jean weren’t leaving anything to chance.
The couple had arranged a bird of prey experience during the afternoon, where everyone got up close with a bald eagle. An actual bald eagle. Yes – that set a pretty high bar for the afternoon.
So, by the time everyone made their way into the dining hall at six o’clock, appetites had very much revved up and guests were expecting something pretty amazing. We didn’t disappoint.
Waiting to greet the group was Hog Roast Cupar’s signature spread, featuring slow-roasted pulled pork, crispy crackling, herby stuffing and applesauce, which they piled eagerly into fresh crunchy cobs. The smell alone was drool-worthy enough, but that first bite? Heaven.
On the side, guests had their pick of tomato and mozzarella salad, mixed salad, herb-dressed new potatoes, coleslaw and marinated chicken thighs – which offered enough variety so that every single guest found something to pile onto their plate. The veggies and vegans weren’t left out either and happily tucked into our grilled veggie kebabs packed with chunky fresh vegetables, optional halloumi and a generous tzatziki dip kept.
It was a brilliant day all round, and judging by the reactions around the tables, we’ve got a feeling their friends will probably still be talking about Hog Roast Cupar a few years from now too.
